Abstract

Most theories of products, organizations, and communities explain why people adopt, engage with, or return to a system.

The Compounding Theory asks a different question:

How do participant investments accumulate into increasing long-term value?

The theory proposes that persistent participatory systems become increasingly valuable when they enable participants to leave behind preserved investments that expand what future participants can meaningfully do.

Rather than explaining motivation, growth, or engagement, the theory explains how participant-created value compounds over time.

The Five Questions of Compounding provide the framework for analyzing this process.


The Problem

Many enduring systems become richer through continued participation.

Open source software improves.

Scientific knowledge expands.

Languages evolve.

Communities mature.

Educational institutions deepen.

Creative ecosystems become more capable.

Traditional theories explain many important aspects of these systems:
