Spectiv
How could AI help people become better thinkers instead of simply giving them better answers?
Spectiv is my attempt to design a product around investigation rather than information.

Most of my work has involved improving existing systems. Spectiv is different. It's an opportunity to start from first principles and ask a question I've been thinking about for years:
How could AI help people become better thinkers instead of simply giving them better answers?
Spectiv is my attempt to design a product around investigation rather than information. Instead of optimizing for speed, summaries, or productivity, the goal is to help people explore ideas, challenge assumptions, connect evidence, and gradually build a richer understanding of the world.
Whether that vision survives contact with reality is part of the experiment.
The Question
AI is becoming remarkably good at answering questions.
I'm more interested in helping people ask better ones.
Spectiv is built around the idea that understanding rarely arrives all at once. It emerges through curiosity, evidence, conflicting perspectives, and the willingness to revise your thinking over time.
The product is designed to support that process.
What I'm Exploring
AI as a Thinking Partner
Rather than replacing human reasoning, Spectiv is designed to strengthen it by helping people investigate complex topics, compare perspectives, and uncover connections they might otherwise miss.
A Personal Graph
Instead of treating every conversation as an isolated interaction, Spectiv explores the idea of a persistent personal knowledge graph that grows alongside its user.
Questions, discoveries, evidence, and evolving beliefs become part of a long-term body of work rather than disappearing into chat history.
Shared Understanding
Some of the most interesting ideas emerge through collaboration.
Spectiv explores how people might build shared investigations, compare evidence, challenge one another respectfully, and develop understanding together without reducing every conversation to debate or consensus.
Why I'm Building It
Every product I've worked on has been an attempt to design better participation.
Spectiv asks what that philosophy might look like if the thing people were participating in wasn't a game, a creator platform, or a fan community—but the process of thinking itself.
It is, by far, the most ambitious design problem I've attempted.
Before the Build
This page captures the ideas before they're tested.
The assumptions.
The principles.
The bets I'm making.
Most of them are probably incomplete. Some will almost certainly be wrong.
That's intentional.
After the Build
If Spectiv ships, I'll return to this page and write a second piece.
Not about what I hoped would happen.
About what actually happened.
Which ideas survived.
Which failed.
Which surprised me.
I think documenting the gap between vision and reality is just as valuable as documenting the finished product.
